Understanding Genesis #8: Seed of the Serpent v Seed of the Woman
Tuesday Apr 12, 2022
Tuesday Apr 12, 2022
In this episode, Rob leads a study of Gen 3 and the judgment on the Serpent, the woman, and the man. Rob notes that as a consequence of their sin Adam and Eve will not rule as one but will each try to usurp authority over the other. Genesis, of course, is not prescribing that the man should be in authority over the woman but is describing the way it is going to be. The study finishes by looking at the NT where Jesus says that we have authority to trample on serpents (Luke 10) and where Paul says that the crushing of the serpent's head happens under the feet of the Church (Rom 16).
Here are some links to Rob's blog posts on women in the Church
Gen 3:11-13
- God asks of Adam: Who told you that you were naked? (11):
- Woman, whom you gave me, she gave me the fruit (12)
- God asks of Eve (13): What is this that you have done? (13)
- The Serpent deceived me
3:14-19 Judgment on the Serpent, the Woman, the Man
God’s words are more __________________ than ______________________
- This is the way it is going to be: it is not a punishment but a declaration of fact
Focus now is on the ________________ of the woman vs the ______________ of the serpent
God does not curse Adam and Eve: God curses ________________________ and ____________________
- Serpent: Eat dust; in accord with his sin of forcing them to eat (14; Ezek 28:17; Is 14:11-12, 15)
- Enmity between serpent and the woman (15): the ‘Protoevangelium’: the first announcement of future redemption
- Enmity between your seed and her seed
- ‘Seed’ most often refers to an immediate descendant (Gen 4:25: Seth)
- ‘Seed’ can refer to a distant offspring or even a group of descendants (as a collective)
- He will bruise your head; you bruise his heal
- To the woman (16)
- “I will multiply” your pain: in childrearing/child conceiving
- Word here refers to _______________________: the circumstances in which children are conceived will be fraught with painful and complicated relationships that cause emotional and physical toil
- 3:16: ‘Your desire will be for your husband . . .’: (Heb teshuqah appears only in 4:7 and Song of Sol 7:10)
- He shall ‘rule’ over you: He will rule as a tyrant (See NLT)
- To the Man (17)
- Cursed is the ground: in toil you shall eat of it
3:20-21
- Adam names “Eve” (20)
- God makes clothes for them (21)
3:22-24 Expulsion from the Garden
- God says: ‘Man has become like one of us’ (22)
- Expelled (driven out) from the garden (23)
- Salah: Language of exile and being driven out like Canaanites: cp Exod 33:1-3; Lev 18:24; 20:23
- Garas: (24): same word for expulsion of Canaanites (Ex 23:28-31; 33:2; Deut 33:27; Josh 24:12, 18; Judg 2:3; 1 Chr 17:21; Ps 78:55; 80:8)
- East of the garden Cherubim are placed (24)
- Cherubim guard the presence of God: embroidered on the curtains of the temple (Exod 26:1; 36:8; 26:31-33; 1 Kings 6:32)
- 2 Cherubim have outstretched wings to cover and protect the Ark! (Exod 26:18-22; 37:7-9; Num 7:89; 1Kings 6:23-28)
- Samar: to guard or keep watch: the very thing Adam was to do (cf Gen 2:15)
Gen 3 and the rest of Scripture
Entrance into the Garden!
- Jesus: “I am the door” (John 10:7); “an open door” (Rev 3:8; 4:1)
- Rev 22:14: enter by gates into the city
Enmity between the woman and the serpent
- Authority to tread on serpents (Luke 10:17-20)
- Paul identifies Satan with the Serpent; Agent of destruction is the Church (Rom 16:20)
- Satan is the ancient serpent (Rev 12:1-17)
- Seed is Christ (Gal 3:16)
- Christ must reign until all His enemies under His feet (1 Cor 15:25)
- destroy the work of the Devil (1 John 3:8-12)
Conflict between male and female
- Reversed (Col 3:18-19)

Understanding Genesis #7: ”Good for attaining wisdom”: Solomon?
Monday Apr 11, 2022
Monday Apr 11, 2022
In this episode, Rob leads a study of the book of Genesis. This week we look at Adam and Eve eating from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Bad. The problem was that they did so of their own accord and not by listening to the Lord. That is, they did not "fear the Lord" which is the beginning of wisdom (Prov 1:7). Instead, Eve, "saw" she "took" and she "gave" it to Adam who "listened to the voice of His wife."
Then we look at Abraham and Sarah in Gen 16. They too decide to make their own rules and Sarah "took" and "gave" to Abraham her slave Hagar. And Abraham "listened to the voice of His wife."
Finally, we look at the Solomon story in 1 Kings 3-4. Finally, so it appears, someone chooses to receive God's wisdom!

Understanding Genesis #6 Beasts (Dan 4, 7; Rev 13)
Sunday Apr 10, 2022
Sunday Apr 10, 2022
In this study of the early chapters of Genesis, Rob leads a discussion of the beasts. In Genesis, humanity was called to rule over the beasts. Instead, humanity chose to decide right and wrong for themselves. As a result, instead of ruling the beasts, humanity becomes a beast (Dan 4). And instead of ruling the beasts, humanity is ruled by the beast--that is, human governments are viewed as beasts.
We have seen that Genesis 1-3 establishes that the covenant God of Israel, the God who called Abraham, the God who appeared to Moses on Sinai, the God who revealed Himself as the Lord God (Yahweh Elohim) is the God who created all things (Gen 2:4).
We have also noted that God planted a garden in Eden where He would dwell within His creation. Thus, Eden was a temple. In addition, later biblical writers affirm that the garden was on a mountain (Ezek 28:14, 16; Exod 15:17; Ezek 40:2; 43:12; Rev 21:10) and it was a place full of precious stones (Gen 2:12; Ezek 28:13). In the “middle” of the Garden was the Tree of Life (2:9). Finally, from the Garden, the river of life flowed and watered the earth (2:10).
We have also seen that Adam and Eve were created to “subdue” the earth and to “rule” over the animals (Gen 1:26-28). They are called to rule well. As they subdue the earth, they are reminded that the plants are given as food to the animals as well (1:30). Thus, they are not to rule for themselves alone.
The creation narrative of Gen 2 describes Adam and Eve not simply as gardeners, but also as priests. As priests they are to “cultivate” and “keep” the Garden (2:15)—when these two words occur together they refer either to Israelites ‘serving’ God and ‘guarding’ God’s word or to priests who ‘keep’ the ‘service’ of the tabernacle (Num 3:7-8; 8:25-26; 18:5-6; 1 Chr 23:32; Ezek 44:14).
Adam and Eve are to be one, and as such, they are to Image God—who is One (John 17:21). Adam’s naming of the animals (Gen 2:19-20) was his first effort to rule. The problem is that Adam was not made to rule alone. He needed a “helper”—i.e., someone to come alongside and join him as an equal in the task of ruling and subduing.
To rule well Adam and Eve will also need the “knowledge of God and bad” (Gen 2:16-17). The question will be whether or not they trust God to give them such knowledge, or if they will decide to determine good and bad for themselves.
This means that we may understand the biblical conflict in terms of kingdoms. Is God the king, or will we attempt to rule ourselves? We know what happens. Humanity chooses to make its own rules. They determine to become god themselves. The Bible then follows the narrative of human history by turning this on its head. Instead, of humanity ruling over the beasts, the beasts rule humanity. Humanity becomes beasts.

Understanding Genesis #4: Tree of Life
Friday Apr 08, 2022
Friday Apr 08, 2022
In this episode, Rob leads a study of the book of Genesis and a detailed look at the Tree of Life. From Genesis through the OT and the Life of Jesus (who was died on a tree) to the Tree of Life in the New Jerusalem, trees play a prominent role in the Bible. Jesus even says, "a good tree bears good fruit." The Psalmist equates a person who studies God's word with a "tree planted by streams of water, whose leaf does not wither."

Notes:
Gen 2:8-17
Notes: Tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of good and bad
- God planted a garden in Eden (8)
- Tree of life and the Tree of the knowledge of good and evil (9)
- Tree of life _______________________ the Garden! 2:9
- ‘Knowledge of good and bad’
- ra does not mean ‘evil’ when it is coupled with ‘good’; instead it means “bad” (cf Gen 24:50; 31:24; Lev 27:9-15; Num 13:19; 24:13; Deut 30:15)
- “To know” in Hebrew is _____________________________ (Gen 4:1)
- The knowledge of good and bad is what enables a person to ____________________________________: (Deut 1:39; 1 Kings 3:9)
- Does mankind ___________________________ what is good and what it evil? or does determination?
- This knowledge is not a bad thing in this context. The bad comes in terms of _________________________ by which they acquire it
- Tree of good and evil means: those who are legally responsible for their actions (1 Kings 3:9); ability to make moral pronouncements
- ‘Discerning good and evil’ is a Hebrew expression referring to kings and authority figures making judgments in ________________________________ 2 Sam 14:17; 19:35; 1 Kings 3:9; Isa 7:15-16
- Adam/Eve were to discern between good and evil! They were supposed to pronounce the _________________________ as evil! And to judge it! Once it entered the Garden Adam/Eve should have deemed its presence as wrong and forbid entry
Trees/Mountains
Trees are the most frequently occurring living thing in the Bible behind God and humans
Ps 1:1-6
This is what the entire book of ________________________ is about!
- It is all to be meditated upon! (Ps 1)
The answer is that the _______________________ is the _______________________wisdom! (Prov 1:1-7)

Thursday Apr 07, 2022
In today's study, we look at the creation account in Gen 2 and then survey the biblical literature to see how the theme of the river of life appears throughout the Bible climaxing in the Gospel of John and the water coming from Jesus' side and then culminating in the river that comes from the Throne in Rev 22:1-3.

Wednesday Apr 06, 2022

Notes for today's study
1:24-31: Day 6: Land animals and Man
5 elements in the formation of humankind
- God blessed them
- Fruitful and multiply
- Fill the earth
- Subdue the earth
- Rule over all the earth
Cp 1:28; Noah 9:1-7; Abraham 12:2-3; 17:2, 6, 8; 22:17-18; Isaac 26:3, 4, 24; Jacob 28:3-4, 13-14; 35:11-12; 47:27; 48:3-4; Israel Exod 1:7, 12, 20; Num 23:10-11; Deut 7:13; Ps 107:38
Cp Lev 26:9; Deut 7:13; 15:4-6; 28:11-12; 30:16; 1 Chron 4:10; 17:9-11, 27; Ps 8:5-8; 107:37-38; Isa 51:2-3; 54:1-3; Jer 3:16, 18; 23:3; Ezek 36:9-12; Hos 1:10
- Creation of mankind (26)
- Change from ‘let there be . . .’ to ‘let us make . . .’
- Repetition of ‘God created man . . . He created them . . . male and female He created them’
- Addition of ‘subdue and rule over’
- ‘Let us make man in our image and in our likeness’: stress point in the formation of mankind
- Hebrew parallelism? No difference between the two terms?
- All are made in God’s image
- To be human is to bear God’s image
- Rom 8:29; 2 Cor 3:18; Eph 4:23-24; Col 3:10: one is becoming the image of God through the process of salvation
- ‘Let them rule’: (26): Subdue (kabas) the earth and Rule (radah) over the creatures (28)
- Subdue the earth: may suggest no more than the task of agriculture
- Rule over the creatures: exercising dominion over the rest of creation
- God delegates to mankind His own kingly authority
- This is the role of Image Bearers
- 1:28: adds ‘subdue’: more forceful; indicates subjecting the one to slavery; here it probably parallels 2:5, 15 ‘keep the land’
- Man is distinguished sexually; not by various species (sexual distinction with the animals comes in 6:19)
- ‘Male and female’: specifies who it was that was made in the image of God
- The dominion was not for the sake of ruling in itself; but for the well-being of that which they rule over
- Be fruitful and multiply (28; Cf Isa 45:18) Created it to be inhabited
- Commission given to Noah (9:1, 7); Abraham (12:2-3; 17:2, 6, 8; 22:16-18); Isaac (26:3, 4, 24); Jacob (28:3-4, 14; 35:11-12; 48:3, 15-16); to Israel (Gen 47:27; Deut 7:13; Exod 1:7; Ps 107:38; Isa 51:2; Lev 26:9; Jer 3:16; 23:3; Ezek 36:10-11, 29-30;
- Thus, Israel was to embody the purpose for humanity
- ‘It was very good’ (31)
Adam and Even fail and the commission of Gen 1:28 is given to:
- Noah 9:1, 7
- Abraham 12:2-3; 17:2, 6, 8, 16; 22:18
- Isaac 26:3-4, 24
- Jacob 28:3-4, 14; 35:11-12; 48:3, 15-16
- Israel Deut 7:13; Gen 47:27; Exod 1:7; Ps 107:38; Isa 51:2
