What if the Apostle Peter has played a far greater role in shaping Christian theology than many Christians realize?
New Testament scholar Dr. Gene Green joins the Determined Truth Podcast to explore the theology of Peter and the message of 1 Peter. Rather than seeing Peter merely as the impulsive disciple who denied Jesus and was later restored, Dr. Green argues that Peter deserves to be recovered as one of the foundational theological voices of the early church.
We explore Peter's possible influence behind the Gospel of Mark, his relationship to Paul, his leadership in the early church, and his crucial role in opening the gospel to the Gentiles.
Then we turn specifically to 1 Peter and its message for Christians facing suffering, exclusion, and social pressure. What did it mean for first-century Christians to abandon the religious expectations of their families and communities? How does Peter tell Christians to respond when they are marginalized or mistreated?
And what does Peter's vision of the church mean for us today?
Our conversation examines some difficult—and highly relevant—questions:
Why has Protestant theology often emphasized Paul while overlooking Peter?
Was Peter a foundational source for early Christian theology?
What does 1 Peter teach about suffering?
Why are Christian identity and community so important to Peter?
What does Peter mean by calling Christians a “royal priesthood” and “holy nation”?
How should Christians understand the household instructions of 1 Peter 3?
Does the Bible endorse hierarchical relationships between men and women?
What can the church's rejection of slavery teach us about interpreting difficult biblical texts?
What is the difference between Christian unity and uniformity?
How should Christians respond to political power and cultural division?
What does it mean for the church to confront evil by doing good?
Dr. Green argues that Peter presents a vision of the church that crosses ethnic, socioeconomic, and gender boundaries. Rather than pursuing domination or political power, Christians are called to become a community shaped by Christ, the cross, hospitality, love, and doing good—even toward those who oppose them.
As Dr. Green puts it, Peter may have been the “lost boy of Christian theology,” but when we look closely, we discover that he has been sitting at the head of the theological table all along.
Join us as we rediscover the Apostle Peter and ask what his theology means for the church today.
Determined Truth exists to equip the church to be the church.

What does James mean when he says that “faith without works is dead”?
Christians—particularly Protestants—have wrestled with James 2 for centuries. Paul says that a person is justified by faith apart from works, while James says that a person is “justified by works and not by faith alone.”
Are Paul and James contradicting each other?
In this final episode of our study of James, we examine faith, works, justice, and what it actually means to live as the people of God.
We argue that James isn't giving Christians a checklist of good behavior. His vision is much larger. Humanity was created to bear God's image, and God's people are called to reflect his character by embodying the values of his kingdom—love, mercy, justice, and sacrificial concern for others.
That leads us into some much harder questions.
What happens when Christians affirm the correct doctrines but fail to pursue justice? Have some Protestant traditions so emphasized salvation “by faith alone” that good works have become practically optional? And what happens when Christians use labels like liberal, progressive, woke, or communist to dismiss an argument without actually engaging it?
The conversation becomes particularly personal as Rob reflects on his recent trip to Israel and Palestine and describes wrestling with the evangelical tradition in which he was raised. We discuss political tribalism, “othering,” Christian support for violence, the danger of allowing political movements to disciple the church, and why shutting down disagreement can become cult-like thinking.
Throughout the episode, we return to James's central challenge:
Faith that never produces action is dead.
We explore:
- Humanity as God's image bearers
- The kingdom of God and biblical justice
- Why caring for the poor is central to James
- The Sermon on the Mount and the theology of James
- Faith and works in James 2
- Paul vs. James on justification
- What Paul means by “works of the law”
- Martin Luther's struggle with James
- Ephesians 2:8–10 and good works
- Antinomianism and “free grace” theology
- Jesus' teaching about knowing people by their fruit
- Justice, mercy, and faithfulness in Matthew 23
- Christianity and political identity
- The danger of labeling people instead of engaging arguments
- Cult-like thinking within Christian communities
- Israel, Palestine, and Rob's recent experience in the region
- Why Christians must be willing to examine their own traditions
- James's definition of “pure and undefiled religion”
James refuses to separate what Christians believe from how Christians live.
The question isn't merely whether we claim faith.
What kind of people is that faith producing?

What was James really trying to accomplish when he wrote his letter to the early church?
In Part 2 of our study through the Book of James, we move beyond individual verses to examine the larger message of the letter. James calls believers to endure suffering faithfully, reject favoritism, care for the poor, control their speech, and live according to the values of God's kingdom—even when those values conflict with the surrounding culture.
Along the way, we discuss:
Why James addresses the "twelve tribes in the dispersion"
The restoration of Israel through Christ
James, the Jerusalem church, and Acts 15
Endurance through trials and suffering
Honor and shame in the ancient world
Why James places such emphasis on the tongue
Violence, retaliation, and the teachings of Jesus
Favoritism toward the rich
God's concern for the poor throughout Scripture
Jubilee, Deuteronomy 15, and Acts 4
Wealth, generosity, and Christian discipleship
Why Scripture should challenge our assumptions instead of merely confirming them
This conversation also explores how the church today should wrestle honestly with difficult biblical teachings. Rather than seeking comfort, followers of Jesus are called to continual transformation by the Holy Spirit.
Whether you're studying James, exploring biblical theology, or thinking through the practical implications of following Jesus, this episode provides historical context and thoughtful discussion.

Check us out: https://www.determinetruth.com
Does the book of James contradict Paul—or have Christians misunderstood James for centuries?
In this episode of the Determined Truth Podcast, we begin our study of the book of James by examining one of the most debated books in the New Testament. The Good Samaritan and redefining "neighbor"
James' concern for the poor and marginalized
Covenantal nomism and Second Temple Judaism
Why James echoes the Sermon on the Mount
James, the brother of Jesus, and his remarkable transformation
Why understanding the Gospels is essential for understanding Paul
We also discuss how the church can faithfully apply James today by pursuing justice, mercy, and genuine love for others rather than merely professing faith.

What does the book of Hebrews mean when it says that Jesus is "better"?
In this episode of the Determined Truth Podcast, we conclude our study of Hebrews by exploring one of its central themes: Jesus is the fulfillment of everything the Old Testament anticipated—not because God abandoned His promises, but because those promises reach their climax in Christ.
Together we discuss:
What Hebrews means by "Jesus is better"
Fulfillment theology vs. replacement theology
Why the Old Testament remains essential for understanding Jesus
The relationship between the Old and New Covenants
Melchizedek and why his priesthood matters
Why Jesus is our eternal High Priest
The significance of Christ's once-for-all sacrifice
The purpose of the Levitical priesthood
Hebrews 11 and what the "heroes of faith" actually teach
Hebrews 12 and persevering through suffering
Why Christians should keep their eyes fixed on Christ—even when the church disappoints them
We also examine several passages that are frequently discussed in conversations about Christian Zionism, dispensationalism, covenant theology, and biblical fulfillment, while emphasizing the importance of reading Hebrews within the larger story of Scripture.
If you've ever wondered why Hebrews spends so much time comparing Jesus to the temple, sacrifices, priesthood, and Old Testament institutions, this episode offers a theological framework that ties the entire book together.

**Hebrews is one of the most theologically rich—and often overlooked—books in the New Testament. In this episode of the Determined Truth Podcast, we continue our introduction to Hebrews by exploring why it has been so influential in Christian theology, why it's often neglected in churches, and how its message is deeply rooted in the Old Testament.**
Rob and Vinnie discuss the book's unknown author, why many scholars believe Hebrews is a sermon rather than a traditional letter, and the challenges of interpreting a book so thoroughly grounded in Jewish Scripture and the sacrificial system. They also examine Hebrews' remarkably high Christology, showing how the author presents Jesus as greater than the prophets, angels, Moses, Joshua, and ultimately the entire Old Covenant.
The conversation also tackles common misunderstandings about the relationship between the Old and New Testaments, emphasizing fulfillment rather than replacement. Along the way, Rob and Vinnie discuss perseverance, assurance of salvation, and why Hebrews repeatedly calls believers to remain faithful to Christ.
If you enjoy thoughtful, biblical conversations that dig beneath the surface, be sure to subscribe and join us each week as we equip the church to be the church.

What is the book of Hebrews really about and who wrote it?
In this episode of the Determined Truth Podcast, we are joined by New Testament scholar Dana Harris to begin an in-depth exploration of one of the most fascinating—and often misunderstood—books in the New Testament.
Hebrews is packed with rich theology, Old Testament references, warnings about perseverance, and one of the highest views of Christ found anywhere in Scripture. Yet many Christians find the book difficult to understand.
Together, we discuss:
Why Hebrews is so important for understanding the entire Bible
Why most scholars do not believe Paul wrote Hebrews
The strongest candidates for the book's authorship
The relationship between the Old and New Testaments
How Hebrews presents Jesus as God's ultimate revelation
The meaning of "Jesus is better" throughout the book
Why Hebrews uses the Old Testament so extensively
The challenges faced by the original audience
Perseverance, suffering, and faithfulness in difficult times
The mystery of Melchizedek and Hebrews 7
Whether Hebrews 11 is really a "Hall of Faith"
How biblical theology differs from systematic theology
What Hebrews teaches about the humanity and divinity of Christ
Dr. Harris also offers practical insights into how modern Christians can read Hebrews without getting lost in the details and why understanding God's larger story of redemption is essential for interpreting Scripture well.
If you've ever struggled with Hebrews—or wondered why it matters—this conversation provides an excellent introduction to one of the New Testament's most profound books.

Does the New Testament support slavery?
In this episode of the Determined Truth Podcast, we conclude our study of Philemon, one of the shortest—and most debated—books in the New Testament.
Paul's letter to Philemon centers on a runaway slave named Onesimus, a wealthy Christian named Philemon, and a challenge that continues to spark discussion today: Why doesn't Paul explicitly condemn slavery?
In this conversation, we explore:
The historical context of slavery in the Roman Empire
The relationship between Paul, Philemon, and Onesimus
Whether Paul is gently persuading Philemon or subtly pressuring him
The significance of receiving Onesimus as "a beloved brother"
How reconciliation stands at the center of Paul's theology
The difference between Roman slavery and American chattel slavery
Why the early church may not have directly confronted the institution of slavery
Whether Paul's teachings ultimately undermine slavery itself
What this letter teaches modern Christians about human dignity, power, and justice
We also discuss broader themes found throughout Paul's writings, including unity in Christ, reconciliation across social boundaries, and the challenge of living out the gospel in deeply broken systems.
Whether you're studying Philemon, wrestling with difficult passages about slavery, or seeking to understand the historical world of the New Testament, this episode provides important context and thoughtful discussion.

The book of Philemon raises one of the most difficult questions in all of Scripture: What does the Bible actually say about slavery?
In this episode of the Determine Truth Podcast, Rob and Vinnie begin a two-part discussion on Philemon, Onesimus, and the complicated relationship between slavery, biblical interpretation, and Christian history. Along the way, they explore how Scripture has been used throughout history to justify slavery, segregation, antisemitism, colonialism, war, and other harmful practices—and why careful, humble interpretation matters.
The conversation examines:
- The historical context of Philemon and Onesimus
- Slavery in the ancient world versus American chattel slavery
- How Christians have used the Bible to defend harmful systems
- Why biblical interpretation requires humility
- The relationship between truth, Scripture, and Jesus
- The trajectory of justice and human dignity throughout the biblical story
- Why Philemon remains one of the most important and challenging books in the New Testament
Whether you're wrestling with difficult passages in Scripture, questioning how Christians have interpreted the Bible, or seeking a deeper understanding of Philemon, this discussion offers thoughtful engagement with one of Christianity's most challenging topics.
