Monday Oct 16, 2023
Monday Oct 16, 2023
In this episode, Rob and Vinnie address the 5th and 6th Seals and begin a look at the 144,000 of Rev. They discuss the importance of the "prayers of the Saints" (6:9-11) for the overall narrative as well as what it means for that the people of God are "sealed."

5th Seal the souls under the altar 6:9-11
- After the opening of each of the first four Seals, John says “I heard” (6:1, 3, 5, 7): With the opening of the Fifth Seal, however, he states “I saw” (6:9).
- the account of the Fifth Seal does not include a reference to one of the Four Living Creatures,
- Or, a command to “Come,”
- Or, a description of a rider on a varied colored horse.
“How long?” (6:10)
- Exod 2:23-25
“They should rest for a little while longer” (6:11)
6th Seal: the nations and the final judgment 6:12-17.
- The 5th was the cry of God’s people
- The 6th is the cry of the nations
The imagery of earthquakes and signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars is common apocalyptic imagery (Isa 34:4 LXX; Isa 13:10-13; 24:1-6, 17-23; Ezek 32:6-8; Hos 10:8; Joel 2:10, 30-31; 3:15-16; Hab 3:6-11; Mark 13:24-26; Acts 2:19-20)
- At the birth of Jesus, there were “signs” in the heavens: such as a “star” (Matt 2:2).
- At the baptism of Jesus: “he saw the heavens opening” and a “voice came out of the heavens” (Mark 1:10-11; see Matt 3:16-17; Luke 3:21-22).
- At the crucifixion of Jesus we are told that “darkness fell over the whole land” (Mark 15:33; see Matt 27:45; Luke 23:44), “the earth shook and the rocks split” (Matt 27:51), and “tombs were opened” (Matt 27:52).
- At Pentecost: the descent of the Spirit at Pentecost (Acts 2:19-20).
Earthquakes signify the presence of God. Exod 19:18; Isa 24:18-20; 29:6; Joel 2:10; 3:16.
Mountains: signify kings and kingdoms.
7:1-17 is an interlude (a pause) See also: 10:1-11:14
- Both interludes between 6-7th Seal/Trumpet
4 angels holding back the 4 winds
- “4 corners” occurs only here in 7:1 and 20:8
The OT context is found in the “marking” of the people of God in Ezekiel 9:4-6
In the NT, the Holy Spirit is called the Seal of God. (2 Cor 1:21-22; Eph 1:13, 14)

Rev 6: The Seven Seals (part 2)
Monday Oct 09, 2023
Monday Oct 09, 2023
In this episode, Rob and Vinnie look at the 1st four Seals of Rev 6:1-9. This passage is commonly viewed as a series of events that begin in some future time and mark the beginning of the "end times." Instead, Rob and Vinnie note that the Seals relay the devastating effect that the nations bring upon the world when God allows them to remain in power. In addition, they note that the effects of the Seals are felt more deeply by the poor and the marginalized. The fact that most Christians were members of the lower class means that they too are impacted. In fact, a key element of John's presentation of the Seals is that the people of God are impacted by each of the first four Seals.

Rob’s blogs related to the 7 Seals
Are the 7 Seals God’s Wrath? #4
Are the 7 Seals God’s Wrath? Part 2 #5
First Seal: the rider on the white horse (6:1-2)
- Mark 13:5-6
- Matt 24:23-24
There are three basic views as to what this rider represents
- The first two views both contend that the rider on the white horse represents Christ.
- The difference between these first two views has to do with whether the rider on the first horse represents Christ at His first coming or if it is a depiction of Christ coming in the future.
- The third view suggests that the rider on the white horse represents false Christs and false prophets.
Second Seal: the rider on the red horse 6:3-4
- John uses the verb “to slay” eight times.
- Jesus as the Lamb that was “slain” (5:6, 9, 12; 13:8)
- People of God the Fifth Seal are those: “who had been slain because of the word of God, and because of the testimony which they had” (6:9).
- 1x: Babylon as the place where one finds “the blood of prophets and of saints and of all who have been slain on the earth” (18:24)
- “to slay” in 13:3.
Third Seal: rider on the black horse 6:5-6
- The Third Seal depicts a world of inflation in which the poor are disproportionately affected
Fourth Seal: Rider on Pale Horse—Death 6:7-8

Rev 6: The Seven Seals (part 1)
Monday Oct 02, 2023
Monday Oct 02, 2023
In this episode, Rob and Vinnie begin a look at the 7 Seals of Rev 6. Are they the "wrath of God" in the last days? Rob argues that the idea that the Seals, Trumpets, and Bowls are God's end-times wrath which is designed to bring the nations--at least those who survive--to repentance is a major misreading of the book of Revelation. Instead, he argues, the Seals (and later the Trumpets, and Bowls) represent what happens when God graciously delays the final judgment. By delaying the end, God allows human governments to remain in power. And human rulers bring deception, war, famine, pestilence, and death. Rob further argues that the devastation that results from human rule also affects the people of God. That is why, he suggests, the 5th Seal is the people of God crying out "How Long."
Show notes:
Rev 6:1-17
Gen 1
- “God said” 10x
- “Let there be” 10x
- “It was good” 7x
- “God” 35x
Gen 1:1 = 7 words
Gen 1:2 = 14 words
- Land 21x
- “And it was so” 7x
- “And God saw” 7x
- “To make” 10x
- “According to its kind” 10x
Mark 10:42-45
Mark 13:5-13
2 things
1)those who suffer the most from the destructive behaviors unleashed by human rulers and their lust for power are the poor and marginalized.
2) There is this mistaken notion that the people of God are exempt from this suffering

Rev 5 The Lamb and the Scroll
Monday Sep 25, 2023
Monday Sep 25, 2023
In this episode, Rob and Vinnie explore Rev 5. It is at this point that the main story of Revelation begins to unfold. Jesus is Lamb who was slain and He is worthy to take the Scroll and to open it! What's on the Scroll? It is God's will and His plan for redeeming the creation.

“Servant songs” Isa 42:1; 44:1; 49:1-6; Isa 52:13, 14-53:12; Acts 8:25-35
5:5-6 is critical for understanding the book of Revelation
1st John’s use of hearing and seeing
2nd Jesus is the Lamb/Lion
3rd This becomes the major source for understanding what “overcome” looks like.
4th Jesus and death and resurrection are the key!
Nations are important to the story
5:9; 7:9—the people of God come from the nations
21:24, 26; 22:2—They walk in the New Jerusalem
The people of God have been redeemed in order that we might reign!: “reign upon the earth” (5:10

The church in Philadelphia was small and of little power yet it is 1 of the 2 churches with only positive features. The church in Laodicea was very wealthy yet it had no positive features.
Rob and Vinnie then spend a lot of time discussing the importance of all this for the church today.
