Rev 8-9 The Seven Trumpets Part 2
Monday Nov 06, 2023
Monday Nov 06, 2023
In this episode, Rob and Vinnie discuss in more detail why Rob believes that the 7 Trumpets are not God's wrath, but are instead a description of what happens to the creation when humanity remains in power. Rob also explains why he believes that the 7 Trumpets are a prelude to both the destruction of Rome's economy (the world's economy) and why the 5th and 6th Trumpets are to be understood in light of the war of "Armageddon."
Understanding Rev 8-9 is critical for discerning the meaning of the book of Revelation especially in contrast with the popular readings of Revelation.

Rev 8-9 The Seven Trumpets Part 1
Monday Oct 30, 2023
Monday Oct 30, 2023
In this episode, Rob and Vinnie look at the 7 Trumpets in Rev 8-9. Rob argues that the 7 Trumpets do not relay God's end-times wrath but that they set forth what happens to the creation when humanity is allowed to remain in power.
Rob identifies several keys in the text that indicate, contrary to what many have suggested, that Revelation 8-9 is not setting forth God's end times wrath, but what happens to the creation when humanity is allowed to remain in power.

Rev 8-9: 7th Seal and the 7 Trumpets
8:1 the narrative resumes and the Seventh Seal is broken.
- 7th Trumpet 11:15-19: the statement in 11:18 “destroy those who destroy the Earth”
- There is a complex overlapping structure to the introduction to the 7 Trumpets that indicate that something is going on!
John is advancing a narrative:
- The clear literary progression that occurs in the accounts of the Seals, Trumpets, and Bowls
- The 7th in each of the series of 7’s appears to bring us to the end: 7th Trumpet we read earlier is obviously the end; yet the 7 Bowls happen afterward
- Each of the 3 series of 7’s close with reference to the theophanic manifestations
Theophanic Manifestations
4:5
8:5 adds “earthquake”
11:19 adds “hail”
16:17-21
8:1 7th Seal
8:2 Intro 7 Trumpets
8:5 end of the 7th Seal
8:6 7 Trumpets
An angel with a censer in the middle of this (8:3-4)
The relationship between the Seals and Trumpets is seen in that both have a 4-3 pattern
Another link between the accounts of the Seven Seals and the Seven Trumpets is that John includes an interlude in the midst of each series.
- the interlude occurs after the account of the Sixth and before the Seventh item in each corresponding series.
They are also related in that they complement one another
- The 1st 4 Seals affected humanity: deception, war, famines—inflation; and death
- The 1ST 4 Trumpets directly affect the four divisions of creation—the earth, the sea, the rivers and springs (freshwater), and the sun, moon, and stars
Then how are they redeemed?
The scroll will reveal how the nations will be redeemed.

Rev 7 The 144,000 and the Great Multitude
Monday Oct 23, 2023
Monday Oct 23, 2023
In this episode, Rob and Vinnie look at Rev 7. Who are the 144,000? Who are the Great Multitude? Rob will argue that the 144,000 and the Great Multitude are the same group. John presents them as a fulfillment of God's promise to Abraham that from your seed all the nations will be blessed and they will become as numerous as the stars and the sand. The main point of Rev 7 is to remind God's people that they have the Holy Spirit so that they may endure the time of suffering and to give them a glimpse of the reward that awaits those who overcome.

5th Seal the souls under the altar 6:9-11
- After the opening of each of the first four Seals, John says “I heard” (6:1, 3, 5, 7): With the opening of the Fifth Seal, however, he states “I saw” (6:9).
- the account of the Fifth Seal does not include a reference to one of the Four Living Creatures,
- Or, a command to “Come,”
- Or, a description of a rider on a varied colored horse.
“How long?” (6:10)
- Exod 2:23-25
“They should rest for a little while longer” (6:11)
6th Seal: the nations and the final judgment 6:12-17.
- The 5th was the cry of God’s people
- The 6th is the cry of the nations
The imagery of earthquakes and signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars is common apocalyptic imagery (Isa 34:4 LXX; Isa 13:10-13; 24:1-6, 17-23; Ezek 32:6-8; Hos 10:8; Joel 2:10, 30-31; 3:15-16; Hab 3:6-11; Mark 13:24-26; Acts 2:19-20)
- At the birth of Jesus, there were “signs” in the heavens: such as a “star” (Matt 2:2).
- At the baptism of Jesus: “he saw the heavens opening” and a “voice came out of the heavens” (Mark 1:10-11; see Matt 3:16-17; Luke 3:21-22).
- At the crucifixion of Jesus we are told that “darkness fell over the whole land” (Mark 15:33; see Matt 27:45; Luke 23:44), “the earth shook and the rocks split” (Matt 27:51), and “tombs were opened” (Matt 27:52).
- At Pentecost: the descent of the Spirit at Pentecost (Acts 2:19-20).
Earthquakes signify the presence of God. Exod 19:18; Isa 24:18-20; 29:6; Joel 2:10; 3:16.
Mountains: signify kings and kingdoms.
7:1-17 is an interlude (a pause) See also: 10:1-11:14
- Both interludes between 6-7th Seal/Trumpet
4 angels holding back the 4 winds
- “4 corners” occurs only here in 7:1 and 20:8
The OT context is found in the “marking” of the people of God in Ezekiel 9:4-6

Rev 6: The Seven Seals (part 2)
Monday Oct 09, 2023
Monday Oct 09, 2023
In this episode, Rob and Vinnie look at the 1st four Seals of Rev 6:1-9. This passage is commonly viewed as a series of events that begin in some future time and mark the beginning of the "end times." Instead, Rob and Vinnie note that the Seals relay the devastating effect that the nations bring upon the world when God allows them to remain in power. In addition, they note that the effects of the Seals are felt more deeply by the poor and the marginalized. The fact that most Christians were members of the lower class means that they too are impacted. In fact, a key element of John's presentation of the Seals is that the people of God are impacted by each of the first four Seals.

Rob’s blogs related to the 7 Seals
Are the 7 Seals God’s Wrath? #4
Are the 7 Seals God’s Wrath? Part 2 #5
First Seal: the rider on the white horse (6:1-2)
- Mark 13:5-6
- Matt 24:23-24
There are three basic views as to what this rider represents
- The first two views both contend that the rider on the white horse represents Christ.
- The difference between these first two views has to do with whether the rider on the first horse represents Christ at His first coming or if it is a depiction of Christ coming in the future.
- The third view suggests that the rider on the white horse represents false Christs and false prophets.
Second Seal: the rider on the red horse 6:3-4
- John uses the verb “to slay” eight times.
- Jesus as the Lamb that was “slain” (5:6, 9, 12; 13:8)
- People of God the Fifth Seal are those: “who had been slain because of the word of God, and because of the testimony which they had” (6:9).
- 1x: Babylon as the place where one finds “the blood of prophets and of saints and of all who have been slain on the earth” (18:24)
- “to slay” in 13:3.
Third Seal: rider on the black horse 6:5-6
- The Third Seal depicts a world of inflation in which the poor are disproportionately affected
Fourth Seal: Rider on Pale Horse—Death 6:7-8

Rev 6: The Seven Seals (part 1)
Monday Oct 02, 2023
Monday Oct 02, 2023
In this episode, Rob and Vinnie begin a look at the 7 Seals of Rev 6. Are they the "wrath of God" in the last days? Rob argues that the idea that the Seals, Trumpets, and Bowls are God's end-times wrath which is designed to bring the nations--at least those who survive--to repentance is a major misreading of the book of Revelation. Instead, he argues, the Seals (and later the Trumpets, and Bowls) represent what happens when God graciously delays the final judgment. By delaying the end, God allows human governments to remain in power. And human rulers bring deception, war, famine, pestilence, and death. Rob further argues that the devastation that results from human rule also affects the people of God. That is why, he suggests, the 5th Seal is the people of God crying out "How Long."

Good news: the determinetruth App: If you wish to view these podcasts on your smartphone through the Determinetruth app simply download the “tithe.ly church” app on your smartphone. As it downloads you will be asked “what church you want to connect with”—insert “determinetruth” as the church name you wish to follow (and Mesa as the city if needed). Then you will be asked if you want the tithe.ly logo or the Determinetruth logo—choose the Determinetruth logo. Once it finishes installing, you will be good to go.
Once it is loaded, simply click on the “blog” icon and it will automatically load.
Finally, we just want to say thank you for listening in and supporting the work of determinetruth. If you have any questions that you would like us to address, we would love to hear them. Use the contact page on Determinetruth.com
