Kingdom of God & Justice #3

This is session 3 of a study that Rob is leading on understanding the Kingdom of God, the mission of God's people, and Justice. What is God's mission? In order for the people of God to be faithful, we must understand what God's mission is. Then we must ask: What is Justice? And what is the relationship between Justice and the Kingdom of God? And what does it mean for you and me? 

Here is the outline that Rob was teaching from 

Immanuel principle: God’s presence among us (Lev 26:11-13; Gen 17:7-8; Exod 29:45; Jer 24:7; 31:1, 33; 32:8; Ezek 11:20; 14:11; 34:24; 37:23, 27-28; Zech 8:8; 2 Cor 6:16; Heb 8:10; Rev 21:7)

1. The purpose of redemption was so that God would __________________ (Exod 29:44-46)
2. Moses understood that this is what distinguished Israel from the nations and was the purpose for Israel’s existence (Exod 33:15-16)

 

God’s presence requires ethical holiness

1. Lev 19:2: ‘Be holy’
2. Result was that the nations would notice (Deut 4:6-8)

 

For Israel, everything was divided into two categories: holy and common/profane

1. God and anything associated with God was holy
2. Everything else was profane/common and ordinary (profane has a neutral meaning)

 

The common/profane was also divided into two categories

1. _____________________ the normal state of people and things

1. _____________________ : because of pollution

 

Only that which was ___________________ could come into the presence of God

1. Sin and pollution renders

1. the holy ____________________
2. the clean __________________
   2. Sacrificial blood would provide cleansing
3. Blood makes the unclean __________________
4. Blood also can make the clean _________________

Since Holiness and cleanness were required to enter the presence of God, and since God’s presence among Israel was a distinctive element of them as a people, and since their distinctiveness was to be their mission to the world, then even their sacrificial system was missional 

1. Because the sacrificial system was fulfilled on the cross; the laws of clean and unclean food symbolized Israel’s distinctiveness from the nations, were also fulfilled
2. Moral and spiritual cleanliness is still in force
3. Paul quotes Lev 26 in 2 Cor 6:16 in order to urge Christians not to compromise their exclusive worship of Christ and their distinctiveness from unbelievers

   2. Kingdom of God: the totality of God’s work ______________________________________ _____________________________________________________ (Rom 8:19-22; Isa 65:17-25; Rev 21:3-4)

• We are the agents of God’s mission
  1. The body of Christ is God’s vehicle for his mission in the world
     1. We are to implement what God is going to do

Gospel of Mark #2: Sandwiching and the Feedings of the Multitudes

Vinnie and Rob look even more deeply at the Gospel of Mark and discuss how Mark arranges his stories so that a second story interrupts the first story in order to provide a key insight into how Mark wants his readers to understand the first story. Why does Mark tell of Jesus feeding 5,000 and 4,000? Why tell of a similar miracle?
